The 136-acre park is an alluring attraction for the surrounding inhabitants, a mix of families, students, and young professionals. Like nearby Fountain Square, the neighborhood is starting to see an influx of new businesses and a burgeoning art scene. Garfield Park and Fountain Square share something else as well: the "Pioneer Family" fountain, which was moved to the Conservatory in 1954 to alleviate traffic at the intersection of Virginia Avenue, Prospect Street, and Shelby Street. (It has since been returned, save for a brief stint from 2009 to 2012 when the permanent site was being renovated.)
Originally intended as a horse racing track, the land was purchased by a group of local businessmen in 1874. The site was named "Southern Park" when the city purchased it a few years later, but was renamed in 1881 following the assassination of President Garfield. In 1912, noted landscape architect George Edward Kessler created a master plan for the park, which included his vision for the iconic Sunken Garden.
Despite its vast expanse and well-curated grounds, visiting the park on a regular basis won't break the bank. All outdoor areas are free and open from dawn until dusk. General admission for the Conservatory is $2, except on special occasions.
With its rich history, beautiful open spaces, and dedicated local residents and businesses, Garfield Park is proving itself to be one of Indy's most up-and-coming neighborhoods. The Garfield Park Eatery & Coffee, lovingly referred to as "The Garf," is a hotspot for local musicians, writers, and artists. Plans for other new restaurants and coffee shops are currently in the works as well.
