Once the major commercial district of downtown Indy, Fountain Square is becoming better known as a home for art galleries and studios, live entertainment, and antique shops. This cultural transformation has attracted growing investment in surrounding residential areas, with long-time residents and new homeowners participating in improving the quality of area homes. Property values are on their way up.
An influx of Germn immigrants in 1870s helped establish much of this neighborhood's character. The Virginia Avenue corridor emerged as the South side's commercial center in the 1860s when the Citizen's Street Railway Company laid tracks down Virginia Avenue and located a turnaround at the intersection of Virginia Avenue with Shelby and Prospect Streets in 1864. Businesses flocked to the area to set up shop.
Fountain Square also played an important part in the Indianapolis theater scene. The neighborhood had more theaters than any part of Indianapolis from 1910 to 1950. Fountain Square continued to fill the role of "downtown" well into the 1960s.
Between 1950 and 1970, many of the original residents moved further out. The construction of the interstate system in the 1970s led to the demolition of hundreds of homes, businesses, and churches. It would be several decades before the nighborhood could bounce back.

Today, Fountain Square is poised for further reinvestment and improvement. Long-term projects are in the planning stages, including upgrades to the streetscape and fountain, and developing additional public spaces. It's also home to the annual "Fountain Square Music Festival," and boasts the city's best view of the downtown 4th-of-July fireworks display.
