Previously nicknamed "Dodge City" for its high violent-crime rate, the neighborhood fell into disrepair in the '80s and '90s with entire city blocks left abandoned. In 2001, the gentrification project was begun by the city, aided by a $4 million HUD grant to stimulate other public and private investment in the redevelopment.
Vacant lots and abandoned homes were acquired, new streets, sidewalks, lighting, utilities, and trees were installed, and special financing packages were assembled for homebuyers. Since Fall Creek Place is a "Home Ownership Zone," it was developed with homeownership in mind. Fifty-one percent of the new homes built were for people with below median incomes. Today, more than 400 new families join long-time residents in calling the neighborhood home.
The mixed-income residential neighborhood consists of narrow, tree-lined streets dotted with a mixture of 19th-centry Victorian homes and new construction. It's a community of hard-working families, sharing in the dream of homeownership, and enjoying the active and diverse surroundings that come with downtown living, complete with new parks, new sidewalks, and other amenities, all less than two miles from the heart of downtown.
The Bridges of Fall Creek Parkway
Three of the five famed Fall Creek Parkway Bridges call this neighborhood home. At the turn of the 20th century, a new generation of masonry bridges were envisioned by city planners. Park Superintendent J. Clyde Power and the Marion County Commissioners oversaw the construction of the three oldest existing concrete arch bridges across Fall Creek along the parkway.
The Central Avenue Bridge was constructed first in 1899. This triple-arched bridge is faced with massive limestone blocks and features semi-circular lookouts at the intermediate piers. College Avenue Bridge followed in 1905. The bridge suffered damage in the 1913 flood., but the city repaired and rebuilt it, much as it was. The Meridian Street Bridge was built in 1917. Recently, the city installed 1920s light standard replicas on the bridge as part of its restoration.
